Kampala, Uganda — Eight years since Irene Ntale’s surprise exit from Swangz Avenue, co-founder and music producer Benon Mugumbya has revealed that her departure remains one of the most painful moments in his long and decorated career.

Speaking candidly during a recent interview on a local television station, Benon, a soft-spoken but highly respected figure in Uganda’s music industry, did not hold back his emotions.
“We were very hurt when Irene Ntale left Swangz Avenue. She is one of the most talented people I’ve ever worked with. I believe we could have gone even further if we stayed together,” Benon said, his tone laced with nostalgia.
Irene Ntale officially left the label in early 2017, shocking both fans and industry insiders. At the time, she vaguely cited frustration with the label’s operations but never offered full clarity on her departure. Speculation ranged from creative differences to management shifts within Swangz.

Ntale had become a household name under Swangz Avenue, churning out hits like “Gyobera,” “Stay With Me,” and “Nkubukinze” — songs that dominated radio and television charts and won her a series of accolades, including Best Female Artist at the HiPipo Awards.
Since going independent, Irene Ntale has maintained a loyal fan base, particularly among live band enthusiasts, but her studio releases have struggled to reach the chart-topping success of her Swangz era.

Benon says he never got closure:
“I actually don’t know why she left. It still baffles me. But I respect her decision.”
