UCC Bans Media Houses from Operating Tally Centers in 2026 General Elections.

As Uganda prepares for the 2026 general elections, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a firm directive banning media houses from operating alternative tally centers. The warning came from UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo during a meeting with media CEOs in Kampala on Friday.

Nyombi emphasized that only results released by the Electoral Commission will be allowed for broadcast. He clarified, “We are not going to allow unofficial or alternative tally centers by any media house. The Electoral Commission is the only body allowed to have a tally center.” Any violation of this directive risks harsh penalties, including withdrawal of broadcasting licenses.

The UCC’s directive responds to controversies from the 2021 elections when some media houses operated tally centers amid a government-imposed internet shutdown, leading to accusations of partiality and unequal access to information.

Nyombi urged media practitioners to exhibit neutrality, ensure responsible reporting, and avoid spreading unverified information that could destabilize the country. “Every information you put out must be verified… Unverified reports can cause unrest,” he warned.
