Following a BBC investigation that exposed his role orchestrating the trafficking and coercion of women under false employment pretenses, Mwesigwa was initially questioned and released on bond before attempting to flee the country. Police re-arrested him after detecting his airline check-in.
Mwesigwa faces serious scrutiny for luring vulnerable women with job offers in hotels and supermarkets, only to force them into prostitution. Prostitution is illegal in the UAE, and multiple tragic deaths linked to his network—including those of Monic Karungi and Kayla Birungi, who fell from high-rise apartments—have triggered calls for a deeper probe. Mwesigwa denies the allegations, claiming he merely helped women find accommodation and that they followed him to social events willingly.
