Mount Semeru also known as Mahameru, one of the 129 active volcanoes in Indonesia, has erupted spewing deadly gasses and rivers of lava. This has evoked the rise of  volcano alerts by authorities to their highest level.

Multitudes have been displaced from villages close to the peak following the declaration of 5 miles from the crater a danger zone. The sunlight has been blocked out by the emitted ashes however no casualties have been reported.

Hendra Gunawan, head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has advised locals to keep away from the volcano’s southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is in the path of the lava flow.

Approximately 50 people died during Semeru’s last eruption in December 2021. Several hundred people suffered serious burns, and more than 10,000 people were evacuated.

Indonesia sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines that is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Never the less, natives still settle around the volcanic mountains because of their reliability for agriculture.
