Mbarara, Uganda – Locals and leaders in Mbarara City have expressed outrage over the Shs 360 million allocated for the renovation of Katete Bridge, which was recently reopened after a 10-month closure. The bridge, connecting Mbarara City’s business district to Katete Town and parts of Isingiro District, was renovated by the UPDF Engineering Brigade.

However, residents argue that the work done does not justify the expenditure, citing concerns of corruption and embezzlement. City Councillor Kajubi Moses estimated that the materials used, including 32 iron plates and 86 pieces of timber, would not exceed Shs 50 million.

The renovation was expedited following public pressure after the bridge showed signs of sinking into River Rwizi. Despite the UPDF completing the work in one month, locals remain skeptical about the cost and have called for an investigation by anti-corruption agencies.
