Rivalry Heats Up as Kadaga Challenges Among’s Growing Influence in NRM Female Leadership Race.

The fiercest political contest within Uganda’s ruling NRM party involves a showdown between veteran politician Rebecca Kadaga and rising star Anita Among for the powerful First National Vice Chairperson (Female) seat. At the August 23 NEC meeting, Kadaga reminded delegates of her decades of devotion to the party and accused Among of being a favored newcomer.

Kadaga underscored the risk of internal divisions, particularly in Busoga, if the contest is forced, describing her political career’s patience and dedication, contrasting it with Among’s rapid rise since becoming Speaker in 2022. She appealed to President Museveni and party members to uphold NRM’s founding values of loyalty, respect, and commitment, warning against ignoring these principles.

The rivalry traces back to the 2021 speakership race and reflects broader tensions between established leadership and emergent political forces within the party
