UNRA Engineer Yahaya Hussan Dies in Flood Rescue Operation.

Pakwach, Uganda - Tragedy struck during a rescue operation on November 27, 2024, when Yahaya Hussan, a 45-year-old marine engineer with the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), lost his life while attempting to save passengers stranded in a flooded taxi on the Tangi River along the Olwiyo–Pakwach road. The incident occurred after heavy rains caused severe flooding, submerging sections of the road and leaving it impassable.

Authorities reported that a commuter taxi, registration number UBH 418W, became stranded midstream while traveling from Arua to Lira with 12 passengers on board. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the driver, Mohammed Okello, recklessly attempted to cross the fast-flowing river, resulting in the vehicle becoming stuck.

Following the alarm raised by local authorities, UNRA officials, police officers, and a UPDF Marine Unit mobilized to conduct a rescue operation. However, during the rescue attempt, the boat carrying UNRA personnel capsized due to strong currents, leading to Hussan becoming trapped beneath it. His body was later recovered during search efforts by the UPDF marine team.

Despite this tragedy, the operation successfully rescued all 12 passengers from the submerged taxi, who were promptly taken to Anaka General Hospital for treatment. The police have since arrested driver Mohammed Okello and opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
