The National Unity Platform (NUP) has undergone a significant internal shake-up ahead of Uganda’s 2026 General Elections, confirming its commitment to refreshing its parliamentary lineup. Veteran legislator and founding NUP member Medard Sseggona lost the party flag for Busiro East to musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukaga, a clear signal that the party prioritizes grassroots appeal and fresh energy over incumbency and experience.

Other notable MPs denied the party endorsement include Makindye East’s Derrick Nyeko and Makindye West’s Allan Ssewanyana, the latter facing legal controversies that likely impacted his exclusion. Joyce Bagala, the Mityana District Woman MP and former journalist who unseated a sitting minister in 2021, likewise failed to secure her ticket amid fierce competition. Analysts interpret these moves as a deliberate strategy by NUP to reinvigorate its ranks and distance itself from controversial or less popular figures.
