Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has come under intense criticism after making remarks that appeared to equate President Yoweri Museveni to God. During a public event, Among reportedly stated that President Museveni is “like God” to Ugandans, a comment that quickly sparked outrage among religious leaders, opposition politicians, and social media users.

Religious leaders, including prominent clerics from both Christian and Muslim communities, condemned the statement as blasphemous and disrespectful to the faithful. Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira of Namirembe Diocese emphasized that “no human being should ever be equated to God,” urging political leaders to exercise humility and caution in their public utterances.

Opposition figures, such as Joel Ssenyonyi (NUP spokesperson), accused Among of promoting a dangerous personality cult and undermining Uganda’s democratic values. Social media platforms were awash with criticism, with many Ugandans expressing disappointment and demanding a public apology from the Speaker.
Among, who has previously been seen as a staunch supporter of President Museveni, has yet to issue an official response to the backlash.
